Saturday
15th April -
Skanco
Vagabonds won the Heron and Brearley sponsored Manx
Challenge Cup after trouncing visitors Waterloo 57 - 29 in a
high-scoring Easter try fest at Glencrutchery Road.
Vagas
opted to field a less than full-strength side as they rested several key
players ahead of the crucial relegation clash at Aspull on 22nd
April. But undaunted, the Manx side showed intent from early on when
player-coach Franzy Germishuys raced home after just six minutes to set
them on their way.
Further
first-half tries from Sam Brennan (2) and Midge van Vuurren, plus four
conversions from the impeccable boot of Jonny Beckley gave Vagas a 28 -17
half-time lead.
Both
sides brought on fresh legs for the second half and it was Vagas who
seemed to choose the better options. Fanie Scheurkogel raced over
from the restart to extend Vagas' lead to 35 - 17 and shortly after that
Jo Louw made it 40 - 17 with a well-taken chip and chase.
Waterloo
then staged a brief revival but as the game ebbed to its conclusion it was
Vagas who finished the stronger. Skipper Kevin Riley picked up a
brace in the last few minutes and replacement lock Jimmy Cubbon also
crossed to leave Vagas with a comfortable victory.
