MATCH REPORT -  23rd September 2006 - Vagabonds 2nds v Southern Nomads - 24 - 5

Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield holders Southern Nomad s crashed to an ignominious 24-5 defeat to last year’s runners up Vagabonds B. The game was billed as a thriller following last season’s Manx Shield Final however it failed to ignite in quite the same way as the previous years clash.

Vagas seemed to have the measure of the Nomad s pack in the early stages and it was forward pressure which led to the deadlock being broken. A series of midfield scrums and mauls sucked in the Nomad s defence and quick ball was shipped wide where Vagas’ full back Dirk Maree joined the line and dove home in the corner. Vagas were unable to keep the momentum though as following injuries to Dave Parkes and Phil Masson, Nomad s ran out of front row options and the game switched to uncontested scrums.

The score remained at 5-0 up to the break after which Vagas began to stretch away. Manx Shield debutant Steve Lapsley powered through the Nomad s midfield and he managed to offload to the new slimline Johnny Morris who galloped home under the posts. Kieran Lever added the conversion to make it 12-0. The impressive Lapsley then turned from provider to scorer as Nomad s tried to chase the game. A forced pass was fumbled on the edge of the Nomad s twenty two and Lapsley was on hand to hack the ball forwards and win the chase to touch it down. Lever again converted and the game was pretty much over.

Fanie Scheurkogel removed any lingering doubts in the seventy first minute. As Vagas pounded the Nomad s line, the defence was caught offside and Scheurkogel tapped the penalty quickly and forced himself over the line. Lady luck did not smile on him for long though as just a few minutes later he picked up a yellow card at the other end and Nomad s number eight Cam Sayle quickly tapped a penalty of his own and squeezed home for a consolation try.

Nomad s currently have quite a big sick list and they will be hoping for much better things in the weeks to come if they are to retain the Shield.
